If you are planning to renovate your home or finish your basement consider installing hardwood flooring. Hardwood floors are beautiful. They are elegant and warm, creating an inviting ambiance in any room. Hardwood flooring is also extremely durable. And hardwood floors are an environmentally friendly flooring option that contribute to healthy indoor air quality. Overall, hardwood flooring is a great choice!
Before I elaborate on the reasons why hardwood flooring is a great choice, I will explain the difference between solid hardwood floors and engineered hardwood floors. Solid hardwood floors are made from solid wood boards that are about 3/4 of an inch thick and are nailed to a sub floor. Because the boards are thick they can be sanded and refinished many times. Solid wood has a natural tendency to expand and contract depending on humidity so it is important that it is installed with correct spacing. It is also important to ensure that solid hardwood doesn’t get wet.
Engineered hardwood flooring is made from layers of plywood bonded together with adhesives with the top layer being hardwood. It can be sanded and refinished several times but not as much as solid wood. Because engineered flooring is made with plywood as well as hardwood it is not affected by humidity and water as much as solid wood is. Engineered floors look like solid wood floors however they are installed differently. With engineered floors the boards are connected together and they “float” over the floor beneath them. This is why it is possible to install engineered floors directly over concrete.
Many people choose to install hardwood floors throughout their entire house for a seamless look. However, I don’t recommend hardwood in areas that have a high potential for moisture such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens. When wood gets wet it can become water damaged and moldy so I recommend you install tiles in these rooms instead. You can create a stylish look by choosing tiles that compliment the hardwood in other parts of your house. When it comes to basements, as long as precautions are taken to prevent moisture and mold when your basement is finished, engineered hardwood flooring is a good option.
Hardwood Flooring – Beautiful & Durable
Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood are both great flooring choices for the main floor and second story of a home. They create a beauty that never goes out of style. Hardwood flooring is elegant and has a high quality look which goes well with any decor. Because wood is a natural insulator, hardwood floors are warm and pleasant to walk on. Both solid wood and engineered hardwood are very durable and will last decades. For all of these reasons hardwood flooring has proven to be a great investment that will increase the value of your home and help it sell faster if you ever decide to move.
Hardwood Flooring Improves Indoor Air Quality
Another great feature of hardwood flooring is that it contributes to healthy indoor air quality. Canadians spend 90% of their time indoors which makes indoor air quality a concern for all of us. Indoor air quality is particularly important to people who suffer from environmental allergies, people who have compromised immune systems and the elderly. Wood floors don’t have fibers, grout lines or embossing that give dust mites, pollen, animal dander, mold and other allergens a place to hide and grow. Therefore, there is improved indoor air quality in homes with hardwood floors.
Hardwood Flooring – Great Ecological Choice
Hardwood flooring is also a great ecological choice. Wood is the most abundant renewable flooring materials available. Wood floors use less water and energy to produce than any other type of flooring. And hardwood floors don’t need to be replaced as often as other flooring options. When a wood floor finally reaches the end of its useful life, the wood can be burned or recycled. For all of these reasons, choosing to install hardwood flooring is an environmentally responsible decision that will reduce your ecological footprint!
Hardwood flooring is beautiful, durable, healthy and ecologically friendly. It is easy to care for and it requires little maintenance. Installing hardwood flooring is a good investment that will increase the value of your home. When considering all of these factors it becomes apparent that hardwood flooring is a great choice!
