A mold removal project in progress!

What is mold?

Mold (also spelled “mould”) is fungus that can grow anywhere wet or damp conditions exist. Mold growth thrives in moist environments. In a home mold is typically found in kitchens, bathrooms, basements and attics.

Mold spores present in large quantities can present a health hazard. Mold can cause allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and other illnesses. The severity of symptoms caused by breathing in mold spores depends on several factors. The type of mold, a person’s sensitivity to mold and extent of exposure. Two molds with extremely toxic effects are Stachyburys chartarum (black mold) and Aspergillus. These molds have potential to cause serious illness. Although some varieties of mold are more toxic than others all molds have the potential to cause ill health. The very young and very old, as well as people with compromised immune systems are at greater risk of mold related illnesses.

In addition to causing health problems indoor mold will decompose building materials over time. This can lead to structural damage, significantly reducing the value of a home. If you have mold in your home, mold removal should be your top priority!

What is mildew?

Like mold, mildew is a fungi that thrives in moist environments. Mildew is often referred to as a type of mold or “mold in its early stages”. Mildew is usually white or gray in colour and has a powdery texture. In comparison, mold is usually black, green or yellow in colour with a fuzzy or slimy texture. Although mildew is not typically as toxic as other types of mold, mildew can also be hazardous to the health.

How to detect mold?

You may be able to see mold in your home or property, especially if it’s black mold. Mold often causes dark spots and/or stains on surfaces. Sometimes there won’t be any visible sign of mold because mold often grows in places we can’t see such as behind wall panels or in vents. However, you may be able to smell mold. Mold has a musty odour.

Even if you cannot see or smell mold you may suspect your home has mold because you’ve had a water problem such as a leaky roof or a flooded basement. Regardless of the reason, if you think you have mould contact Alert Restoration. We’ll conduct a mold inspection free of charge.

What is a mold inspection?

A mold inspection is an examination of your home to determine if there is evidence of mold growth. In addition to looking for visual signs of mold, Alert Restoration will inspect your house to see if there are areas with excessive moisture, structural damage or any other signs/indications of mould growth. If mold is found in your home Alert Restoration will provide you with an assessment of the problem and a quote for mold removal. Alert Restoration will also provide a recommendation and quote for fixing the moisture issue that initiated the mould growth.

Is mold testing required?

According to Health Canada and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), in most cases a mold test is not required. It is not necessary to measure the exact amount of mold in the air or to determine the exact type of mould that is growing is because all mold is potentially harmful. As well, the concentration of mold spores in indoor air is constantly changing, people have different sensitivities to mold and standards for determining what is and is not an acceptable quantity of mold have not been established. The bottom line is – if you have mold in your home, the mold has the potential to cause ill health. Mold removal should be your top priority!

There are some situations where a mold test is required. For example, a mold test may be a requirement of a home inspection. If a mold test is required Alert Restoration will work with a third party air quality professional to obtain air samples. This avoids any conflict of interest and provides our customers with unbiased test results.

How to get rid of mold?

Alert Restoration begins the mold removal process by taking appropriate precautions to ensure the mould problem remains localized and mold spores do not spread from the affected area throughout the house. Inhaling mold spores can be hazardous to one’s health so Alert Restoration’s mold professionals will set up negative air containment chambers to prevent the mold from spreading.

In order to eliminate the mold problem, absorbent or porous materials such as ceiling tiles, carpet and unpainted drywall may have to be removed. Wearing protective gear, Alert Restoration’s mold professionals will carefully remove these materials and discard them using source containment procedures. It is often possible to remove mould from semi-porous materials such as painted drywall or wood by cleaning them.

Alert Restoration uses a mold removal process called Soda Blasting to remove mold from structural components such as floor joists, wall studs and concrete. Baking soda is blasted at high pressure removing mold and mold staining. The soft, angular material removes mould without damaging surfaces and because baking soda is applied with compressed air it is able to clean areas that are difficult to reach. Baking soda absorbs moisture and its natural deodorizing properties remove lingering smells so your home will no longer smell moldy.

The final stage of the mold removal process is HEPA vacuuming and the installation of air scrubbers. This ensures mould spores are removed from surfaces and the air. Surfaces are also treated with antimicrobial coatings in order to prevent future mold growth.

How to prevent mold from returning?

After the mold removal process is completed, the moisture problem that led to mold growth must be corrected. Whether the mould problem was due to a leaking pipe, excessive humidity or some other reason, Alert Restoration will correct the underlying moisture issue so that mold will not grow back. Because Alert Restoration specializes in home renovations as well as mold removal, you can rest assured knowing your home will receive superior quality workmanship when your moisture problem is corrected!
